I Went to the Baby Shower

I attended my cousin's baby shower on Sunday.   I was really sort of dreading it.  I am happy report I had a nice time.  It was a beautiful shower and the sadness I was anticipating wasn't there... thankfully.  About halfway through I sent a quick text to my husband to let him know I was okay and he responded with this super sweet text.

It helped that I chose the most beautiful baby gift ever.  My cousin originally pinned it on Pinterest.

Source: etsy.com via Melissa on Pinterest

As soon as I saw she pinned it, I called my mom and sister to see if they wanted to go in on it, and then  I contacted the etsy seller and placed an order.  The shop owner, Becky, was fabulous to work with and I was thoroughly impressed with the frame.

{This is the one I ordered... custom designed with your choice of frame, background, and font}

This was a huge hit at the shower both with the mother-to-be and the guests.  I also included a copy of the fabulous book, Love You Forever the quote on the frame comes from.  My cousin was in near tears when she opened it and said she couldn't wait to go home to hang it on the wall.  I am so glad she loved it.  I cannot wait to place an order from The Sugared Plums on etsy for my own baby... soon.  If you are looking for a gift, check her out.  She has tons of sales and 100% feedback.

{She has no idea I am sharing this, I received no discount, credit, etc... I am just sharing a new etsy shop that I love}

Jungle Birth Announcement Printable

I made this print for my friend Valerie's new baby, Joel.  However instead of posting it here with all of his information, I made a "sample" one to share here.  His looks exactly the same, expect it has his personal information on it. It will go perfectly with his jungle themed nursery.

I sent it to Walgreens to be printed and cannot wait to frame it and mail it to her to hang on his wall.  I added it to my Etsy shop, if anyone is interested.  You can find it here.   You can customize it. It comes as a JPG file to be printed as an 8x10.  You can use coupon code APRIL12 to take 30% off anything in my little shop for the entire month of April.

This is NOT a 2011 Year in Review

I will spare you from sharing my top 10 recipes, projects, posts, etc... although I have enjoyed reading everyones.  It's mostly because I just don't feel like going back through and re-sharing them.

2011 hasn't been the best year for us... but I still want to remember the things..both good...and really bad that happened in our lives in 2011 - especially since I neglected to begin my annual Shutterfly album until two days ago.  I am happy to say I finished it last night...and it is patiently sitting in my shopping cart until I get a coupon for a free book... because I just KNOW if I go ahead and order it the free coupon will come the next day.

Madison comes home this evening after spending a great week with her grandparents.  I am happy she is coming home.  Chris and I have really enjoyed some alone time this week... but our house is just not the same without her.

I am HOPING like hell that 2012 is a better year for our family on every level...

financially
physically
emotionally

and that we end 2012 with a healthy baby...finally...please.

Constant Reminders of What Should've Been...

Yesterday was the first day since November 9th that I haven't cried.  November 9th was supposed to be my first appointment... where I left with all sorts of pregnancy information and a little sonogram picture that I could take home and use to create our Christmas cards.  But that isn't what I left with...

The hits keep coming...

I really wish Baby Center who I have unsubscribed from...and emailed... would stop sending me updates on the baby I am no longer having... because I can guarantee what they think my baby looks like now... is no longer accurate.

And I am kicking myself for signing up for a free subscription soon after I found out I was pregnant to Baby Talk magazine... because that arrived in the mail today-

And I am not sure how I ended up on an email list for a formula company... but those emails could stop coming too...because there are no family beginnings happening in this house...

Then of course this bill comes in the mail today.  We have pretty good health insurance through my husband's employer that we pay A LOT for each week.  When I pay A LOT for our health insurance I don't expect to pay A LOT of additional expenses out of pocket.  I got a bill today for $311.63.  Now I had three different sonograms.... one on the 9th (where I was told my dating was wrong...it was too early...come back in a week), one on the 17th (where I was told nope... we were wrong...there isn't a live baby in there... and there hasn't been for some time), and one on December 2 (yep... all is clear... there are no more baby remnants inside of you?.  I expected to be hit hard out of pocket for the sonograms.  What I am having trouble swallowing... is the $120 fee... knocked down to $80.71 for our appointment with the OBGYN that took place after our second appointment...which went like this -

We waited and waited and waited to see someone.  She came in, sat down, and told us there was no baby.  That it had most likely died around six weeks.  As I sat there sobbing... she never offered me a tissue...instead I wiped my tears on my jacket.  She gave me three prescriptions and offered very little guidance for how to take the Cytotec to get the miscarriage going... didn't give me a sheet of paper with directions, nothing... Most of what she said was a blur... and I ended up Googling at home a week later before I used it to make sure I knew what to expect.   When I asked her what may have caused it... she insisted we come back in for a consultation prior to trying again... even though I had just seen my doctor back home for the same in July.  She made me feel like it was my fault. She offered us no answers, no sympathy, and no hope...and now I owe $80 for that?  It wasn't until out third ultrasound (which we haven't even been billed for) that I was able to meet with a doctor who had some compassion, who listened to my story, who listened to my plan for the future, and who offered me a tissue when I began to cry.

I want to go a day without constant reminders of what happened... I just want to move on.

I've Stopped...

I've stopped...

making great dinners,

taking photos,

putting effort into my baking,

painting,

reading good books,

caring what I look like when I go out (hello...pink shirt I wear all of the time and eyebrows who haven't been waxed in forever),

taking my time with the things I do,

putting forth much effort in connecting with family and friends,

volunteering at Madison's school, and

being interested in doing anything social.

Some of these things stopped with the move from hell this summer... some stopped as the months passed where we weren't conceiving, some stopped when I was pregnant and just too tired for anything, and some stopped once I knew our baby was no more...

I want my life back.

I want all of those things back in it.

I want it to be better than if ever was before.

2011 has sucked.  I refuse to let the last month of it continue to suck.

There are some changes to be made.

Even those that never fully bloom bring beauty into the world...

I haven't actually "miscarried" yet.  We were given three choices when at the doctor's office last week.  We chose one thing (suppositories)... and later through careful consideration between my husband and I chose something else (letting nature take its course).  Something that feels right for us.  Something that we sought a second opinion on before deciding from a medical professional.  How we are handling to have this end... is my decision... that I made as a woman with my husband... that isn't up for discussion or criticism.

I no longer feel pregnant though... my symptoms have disappeared.  I have more energy.  My carpal tunnel which totally vanished during my pregnancy... was back this morning.  The diet cokes I couldn't wait to drink after our baby arrived... somehow don't taste as good now... as I thought they would.

I am learning that some people just don't know what to say.  I am learning that just saying "I am sorry" or not saying anything at all... is better that some of the things I have heard such as ...

"Everything happens for a reason" - This doesn't make someone who has suffered a loss feel better.  While everything may happen for a reason, it doesn't always provide comfort.

"You didn't really lose a baby because it wasn't formed" - To us it didn't matter... it still hurts.

"It will happen again... do not worry" - Easier said than done.

"I would wait before trying again... if you hurry, you might stress too much about what happened" - See... the person who told me to wait before trying again... they were never asked, they just took it upon themselves to offer up that bit of advice. I never asked anyone (other than my husband) when we should try again.

My husband and I had a great (tear-free) conversation last night about what is happening to us.  We discussed as a couple our wishes, our timeline, and our plan for our family.  We are still disappointed.  We are still sad.  I still have cried every day since our appointment last Thursday.  But we are also hopeful...and excited...for our future...and nervous...and scared.

When the pain you feel is beyond your words...

I am supposed to be planning for a baby.  I am supposed to be creating this amazing idea I had for a Christmas card this year to announce to all of our friends and family that we are having a baby.  I had our new blog designed to be A Dozen Years Later because we aren't supposed to be Just the 3 of Us anymore...

We've known since Thursday October 13, 2011.  I got the positive test first thing in the morning.  I baked cupcakes with pink and blue sprinkles and wrapped up the PREGNANT test in a cute little gift bag for Chris to open when he got home so I could share with him and Maddie we were finally going to have a baby... after months of heartache and trying.

November 9th, 2011 - Today was supposed to be a great day.  I had my first obgyn appointment and they were going to do a sonogram.  According to my calculations I should be 7 weeks 6 days pregnant today.  When I went in for the sonogram... the technician started moving the wand around and it was very apparent to me there was nothing there.  She kept looking and looking.  She said she saw a yolk sac... which a baby should be in and insisted based on those measurements the baby should be 7 weeks 3 days... which really isn't that far off from my calculations.  I pretty much got no answers today.  They sent me home and I go back next week for another sonogram.  I am trying really hard to not lose hope... but it is hard and it sucks.  I just want to drink a big ole cherry coke zero (which I cut out the day I found out I was pregnant) and climb into my bed until next week.

November 10th, 2011 - I went to bed at 6 PM last night...and cried most of the day today.  Off and on.  Madison doesn't know a thing is wrong... and I am dreading having to tell her.  I am absolutely dreading it and wish it could be avoided at all costs.  While I understand certain people tend to me optimistic... I appreciated a "keeping it real" email from a fellow blogger who I have corresponded with for some time now.  I told her before any of my real life friends because we had talked about struggles conceiving and other things before.  Knowing she recently suffered from a miscarriage/blighted ovum I reached out to her this morning via email for some insight.  The whole "maybe you are earlier than you thought" is bullshit.  I know I am not.  I have been calculating EVERYTHING for close to a year... I know when it happened.  It wasn't earlier... or later... I know when it happened.  And I knew when the lady put the wand in and the screen was an empty black hole... that my darkest fears had come true.  So now I sit and wait... either for my body to physically and visibly let me know things have ended... or I wait for the bullshit that next week will be when I have to sit in a waiting room of babies and moms who are visibly pregnant only to be told what I already know today is true... that this baby just didn't make it... it never really formed as it should have.  Then I get to walk out...passing the babies and the pregnant moms again... as I walk to my car... no further along in this journey than I was months and months ago when each month my period would come... I thought then... the months when I was certain I was pregnant and my period came... that those cries... that that heartache was the worst pain I had ever felt.  I was wrong.

November 17, 2011-We had our follow up appointment today.  I was seriously making myself so sick right before... My heart was beating faster than it ever has.  We walked in for the sonogram... and again... I knew.... an empty black hole of a uterus was on the screen... again she said she saw some what of a fetal pole... but she clearly wasn't as talkative as before... no printout was given to us of our baby.  I knew.  We had to then wait for our nurse's appointment.  I joked with Chris that they were playing Paper Rock Scissors in the back to determine which one had to come out to tell this couple there was no baby.  A doctor actually came in to talk to us...sat down and said "Well I am sorry I do not have better news for you".  Then I lost it.  I had expected it... I had prepared for it, but I still lost it.   We didn't have a blighted ovum... there was the beginnings of a baby that had started to develop until around 6 weeks or so... there was an unstable fetal pole she said.  Then she said something about it being nature's way of working things out... and then I wanted to punch her.  Yes lady... you are probably right... but don't say that to me.  We have decided to forgo the D & C at the hospital and have decided to use suppositories at home to finish the miscarriage process at home.  We are sad and we are broken.  I am most sad to tell Maddie. Yet I know I cannot put it off forever... we have to tell her.

So here we sit... 16 months to the day when we got married... realizing the baby we have known about for five weeks... the baby we had already named... the baby who has two sleepers already hanging in the closet... the baby we had wanted so desperately, had dreamed of bringing home, who we had pictured sitting in our living room holding... is not to be.   And as much as we want to add to our family... I don't know when I will have the strength and energy to try again.

The Longer You Wait...

I found this today on Pinterest... maybe somehow Pinterest knew what I needed to see... although I am pretty sick of waiting.

My lunch consisted of a Coke Zero and a peanut butter Snickers on the way home from the grocery store yesterday... in between hysterical wails while thinking of the baby we so desperately want but cannot seem to have.

I noticed a zit on my face this morning when I was driving Madison to school.

Oh ... and the pregnancy tests I took yesterday and Sunday were both negative.

So it was really of no surprise to me when I got my period today.  But it hurt nonetheless.  And to be perfectly honest... I am pretty sick of hurting like this.

Oh and if we know each other in real life... I am totally okay with not talking about this.  I'd actually prefer not to.

Would You Let Casey Anthony Babysit for You?

They showed this clip on The View Thursday morning.  Did anyone else see it? Very interesing.  What are your thoughts?

She definitely would never be babysitting for my children!!

MTV's 16 & Pregnant Adoption Special

I will admit it.  I am 33.  I watch 16 & Pregnant and Teen Mom.  I watch it every single week.

I guess in some ways its like watching a train wreck.

Sometimes there are story lines which I really think are amazing.

Such as the story of Catelynn and Tyler.

{Source}
Now I mean this in the nicest possible way... Catelynn and Tyler...well they don't come from the best families.  Tyler's dad is remarried to Catelynn's mom.  His dad is now in jail.  Catelynn's mom is a poster child for poor parenting.  It is amazing that out of all of the episodes of this I have watched... I think Catelynn and Tyler are the smartest out of all of them.

Catelynn and Tyler chose to give their baby up for adoption make a life plan for their baby.   On last night's adoption special they had a guest on there who said it is best to refer to adoption in this way.  It makes sense.  Catelynn and Tyler knew their baby would have a much better life with a more established family.  They placed Carly with Brandon and Teresa.

{Source}
On last night's episode Brandon and Teresa were on there talking about their life with Carly.  They even showed a video of her.  Their story is such a fabulous example of everything wonderful about adoption.

While watching it I was sobbing... like a hysterical sobbing mess.  I just think it is such a great story.  I wish adoption was more affordable for average-middle class people who want babies.  I wouldn't mind adopting a baby... I just think it is so expensive.

Did you watch? What were your thoughts on the special?

Book Review - Waiting for Daisy by Peggy Orenstein

I shared last week that I had ordered this book.  It was a quick read and I enjoyed it very much.  A lot of it hit home with me. Waiting for Daisy - A Tale of Two Continents, Three Religions, Five Infertility Doctors, an Oscar, An Atomic Bomb, a Romantic Night, and One Woman's Quest to Become a Mother is definitely a book I would recommend.  It is the memoir of author, Peggy Orenstein and is a New York Times bestseller.

Here are some of the parts I marked while reading that 'hit' me for different reasons.  When I am reading I like to mark the pages or lines I want to return to.

  • It's devestating.  In some ways it's even harder when you already have a child, because you know what you're missing.
  • "It feels so unfair " I complained to Steven.  "Everyone else has a baby.  I've been through so much- I should get to have one, too."  "You're wrong, " he said.  "It's not unfair, Unfair is when my friend, Lynn died at forty-two.  Unfair is her daughter was only three at the time.  This is unfortunate, but it's not unfair.
  • You prentend to talk about normal things, but I can tell you're thinking about fertility the whole time.  You're this angry bitter person fixated on having a baby.
  • The only way to survive this is to be grateful for the two of us, for what we have together.

Exposing Myself...but not in the weird way...

I have been writing about this for awhile now...but they always stay as drafts.  I went back and forth before even posting this…but then I realized if I cannot share my true feelings on my blog…then why have it? So this won’t be a recipe, or a funny photo from work, or about my Pinterest obsession…it will be about something my husband I have been dealing with and pretty much keeping it to ourselves for a few months now.

I am sick of being sad, angry, frustrated, and confused. I am sick of being jealous of other women’s pregnancies and babies. I am sick of not feeling like I can’t even look at babies when we are at stores or restaurants. I am sick of my daughter pointing out every single baby she sees and telling me how cute they are and not knowing how to tell her it breaks my heart even more when she does it….because she really loves babies and is excited and wants a sibling. I am sick of wanting a baby with every ounce of my being and every single month being sad…so sad…that it is starting to really affect my home life.

So today I figured enough was enough…and I scheduled an appointment with my Obgyn/nurse practitioner who I love and trust and know I can be perfectly 100% open and honest with about how this has been making me feel…which is like total shit.

I ordered two books from Amazon  [I wrote this last week and just posted today...but they both arrived today and I cannot wait to read them}–

Infertility Survival Handbook - while I haven't been diagnosed as infertile...and could be jumping the gun... I still felt this would be an informative book to read.

I am going to work on getting healthier…so I am in the best possible condition to bake a baby. I am going to eat better and move more.  I am going to get more rest.  I am going to work on relaxing and not getting stressed out.

I do realize that I already have more than some who are struggling to have a baby. We do have an eleven and a half year old daughter who we love and are so thankful to have her. However it doesn’t make this hurt any less...  I guess I never thought this would ever be an issue...so I never imagined how lonely and isolating this could be.

My Surrogate Mother Journey

Only a handful of real-life family and friends know I was almost a surrogate mother.  My interest started back in 2008.  I began forming an interest in it and researching what it would entail.

I decided to become a traditional surrogate meaning I would be inseminated with the father's sperm.  This would make me the biological mother.  I wasn't interested in taking the medications associated with gestational surrogacy, so this was the type I chose.  There is also another popular kind of surrogacy called gestational surrogacy...which usually involves a donor egg and the father's sperm or a embryo created by the mother and father is placed in the surrogate mother.

Eventually I posted an ad within an online forum for surrogacy.  I talked to a few couples.  I ended up 'matching' with Michael and Brad, a gay couple from Kentucky interested in having a baby.  We immediately clicked via email, began talking on the telephone, and they eventually visited my town with Brad's mother for a visit.

I never ended up becoming their surrogate.

Several months ago... I learned Michael and Brad had their baby...a girl named Ashton...with an Indian surrogate.  You can read their story {here}. I was actually shocked when I read the article.  I even contacted Michael about the article and a huge part of it that is completely false.

Brad and his new baby via Indian surrogacy - Ashton
You see... I am the Virginia surrogate mentioned in the article.  I never received $20,000 from them.  We parted ways, because yes, as the biological mother of their child, I wanted it written into the contract that if they both were to die in the months following the baby's birth I would regain custody.  From what I understood from all of my research this was a common request granted in surrogacy contracts.  I was helping them to have a baby.  Not Brad's mother...who they wanted the baby to go to if they both died.  The way I looked at it was like this - if driving home from the hospital both of them had died... I wanted the baby back.

Our lawyers couldn't work out an agreement.  We couldn't come to a compromise with this aspect.  There had been a lot of compromise throughout the contract process.  This was one aspect I was not willing to compromise on.  I received an email via their lawyer that our surrogacy relationship had ended.  Michael tried to pay me $10,000 for deciding not to proceed with the agreement.  I did not/would not accept the money from them.

Yes, as a single mother the money was going to be a nice cushion for my bank account and would help me to continue to provide a great life for my daughter.  However, I wasn't in it for the money.  Had I been in it for the money I would have accepted the money from Michael.  I loved being pregnant and I wanted to help this couple I had grown fond of.

To read this false statement in a news article really upset and angered me.  Michael and Brad bought me an ovulation predictor kit and two meals when they came to visit.  That is it.  Other than that they never paid me any money or bought me anything else.

I think back on it now...and think it worked out how it was supposed to.  Very soon after I met my current husband and our relationship blossomed... I am not sure if I would have met him and started dating him had I been pregnant with Michael and Brad's baby.

Apparently Michael and Brad have started their own surrogacy agency called BabiesRIndia to help other couples use Indian surrogates.

Even though my surrogascy journey did not pan out how I originally wanted it to I still think surrogacy is an amazing thing...and I am glad to see it is getting more media coverage and several celebrities have used it recently.

I am Richer than 75% of the World

I saw this today on a blog I follow and it really helps to put things in perspective for me.

It makes the little things and the big things I often complain about seem not that bad.  Sure we are moving...and don't have a home yet...although we are hoping to fix that this week.   Nor do I have a job for when we move...not that I want one, but I think I need one. I could be skinnier.  I could laugh and smile more.  We could make more money.  Or my husband could so I could stay at home.  We long for another baby.... it hasn't been as easy we had thought to get #2.   Sometimes I hate getting up and going to work in the morning.

All in all we have a great life.

Friday Night Tidbits

    • I made this fabulous cake this week.  I got the recipe from one of my new favorite go to blogs for great recipes.  It is very RICH.  I let Madison bring some to school today to share with her friends.  I sliced little slivers of the cake and wrapped them in little foil packets.  I enclosed little plastic forks. All the girls at the lunch table enjoyed the cake...except for one who had just a bite.  Madison offered it up to another girl who loved her slice.  This little girl ate TWO slices of this RICH cake and licked the bits of frosting off of the foil pieces.  Madison told me after school the little girl left science class early...she was sick from all of the chocolate...and puking...and had to be picked up by her mother.  Its amazing but a small slice is plenty.

    • Madison's favorite teacher is having a baby.  She is having a baby boy.  Tonight I took Madison to the Carter's store and let her choose a present for her teacher's baby.  She chose these super cute outfits.  Being in the Carter's store...made me long for my own baby # 2 to shop for... I guess for now I will have to just buy many cute gifts.

    • Speaking of babies...my cousin Lauren had a baby.  I have been meaning to send him a gift.  Tonight after dinner I headed to AC Moore and bought these things to make baby Lukas a fabulous gift.  I plan on making it this weekend and mailing it out on Monday.  No more procrastinating.

    • I love Kevin & Amanda's blog.  She was a lifesaver last year when I was DIY our summer beach wedding.  I love her free fonts...seriously they are the best.  This week she had a recipe for Chess Squares...also known as Gooey Butter Cake.  I made them last night. A-M-A-Z-I-N-G and only 5 ingredients!  I didn't take a photo of these, but check out the recipe on Amanda's blog - she has a beautiful photo of them.

To Have Another Baby or Not?

Not my usual recipe...or craft...but something very much on my mind.

Did you recently see Octomom on Oprah? Did anyone watch? I watched it yesterday on the dvr with my husband...who happened to come home from work to me watching it. She had Suze Orman on there giving her financial advice.

One of the things I felt that was the best part of the show is they Suze told her you are no worse than the parents who have 4 kids...are struggling to provide and have a 5th, no worse than the parents with 1...who are struggling to provide, and have a 2nd. She had 6...was struggling and ended up with 8 more. But she knew she was struggling with the 6 and decided to have another pregnancy. It really made sense to me. It really made me respect her more that she admitted she made a mistake, is struggling, and needs help.

It also made me think a lot of about my own situation, my desire to have another baby, yet knowing we are about to embark on a big move for our family, to a place where I don't have a job yet, not sure if I will find a job or what I will do, and we are also about to spend lots of money on orthodontic work for Madison (starting today...she has a 3pm appointment). My parents offered to pay for all of the orthodontics for Maddie. How silly would it be for us to go ahead and have another baby when my parents are paying for the medical bills of the child we already have?

Up until now...well ever since the wedding we have just been of the mentality if it happens...it happens...we even had a month where we definitely thought we were expecting (very late period)...but we weren't. I am going to resume birth control with my next period for at least the next year when then we will be able to take another closer/harder look at our situation and where a new baby would fit.  I definitely think its the smart decision to do...a decision that is made with our heads...and not our hearts.
